Il Sentiero della Bonifica

Country: Italy

EUROPEAN GREENWAYS AWARD 2011

The Sentiero della Bonifica is a 62 km traffic-free cycling and walking route that follows the historic Canale Maestro della Chiana between Arezzo and Chiusi in Val di Chiana. Built on the former maintenance road of the canal, it is almost entirely flat and suitable for cyclists and walkers of all ages and abilities.

The route combines nature, culture, and history. Travellers pass through landscapes linked to the ancient Etruscan civilization, historic locks and hydraulic works, fertile agricultural land, and important natural areas such as Lake Montepulciano Nature Reserve and Lake Chiusi, both renowned for birdlife and biodiversity.

A key strength of the Sentiero della Bonifica is its accessibility and integration with rail transport. The route can be easily reached by train from Arezzo and Chiusi, allowing visitors to complete the journey without retracing their steps. Services along the route include bike rental, luggage transport, accommodation, visitor information, and cyclist support facilities.

Overall, the Sentiero della Bonifica offers a relaxing and immersive way to discover Tuscany’s lesser-known heritage, combining outstanding scenery, Etruscan history, traditional agricultural landscapes, and sustainable mobility in a route designed for slow travel.
