Voie Verte du Calavon
Country: France
The Véloroute du Calavon, also known as the Voie Verte du Calavon, is one of the most successful railway-to-trail conversions in southern France. Located in the heart of the Luberon Regional Natural Park, it follows the route of the former Cavaillon–Apt–Volx railway line, which once served the agricultural and industrial communities of Provence. After the railway’s gradual closure during the 20th century, the corridor was transformed into a safe, traffic-free greenway for cyclists and walkers.
Today, the route extends for approximately 45 km, forming part of the EuroVelo 8 – Mediterranean Route, a major European cycling corridor linking Spain with Cyprus. Most of the trail is built on the former railway alignment, providing a smooth surface, gentle gradients, and excellent accessibility for families and recreational cyclists.
The greenway runs through the picturesque Calavon Valley, passing vineyards, lavender fields, orchards, and some of Provence’s most attractive hilltop villages. Cyclists enjoy views of the Luberon mountains while travelling through a landscape rich in natural and cultural heritage.
