Val de Zafan Greenway

Country: España, Terra Alta

The Val de Zafán Greenway is one of Spain’s most spectacular rail trails, created on the former La Puebla de Híjar–Tortosa railway line. The route offers over 83 km of continuous greenway between Valdealgorfa (Aragón) and Tortosa (Catalonia), with additional sections in northern Teruel.

Following the gentle gradients of the former railway, the greenway crosses diverse landscapes including Mediterranean forests, olive and almond groves, river valleys, and dramatic mountain scenery. One of its most distinctive features is its remarkable railway heritage, with 44 tunnels, 7 viaducts, numerous bridges, and restored station buildings that now provide services for visitors.

The route passes through the historic regions of Matarraña, Terra Alta, and Baix Ebre, linking charming villages, cultural landmarks, and protected natural areas. Highlights include the famous Equinox Tunnel, the impressive Matarraña River Viaduct, the spectacular Canaletes Gorge, and panoramic views of the Ebro River before reaching Tortosa.

Suitable for cyclists, walkers, and people with reduced mobility, the greenway combines nature, history, and sustainable tourism. Its restored stations, tunnels, and viaducts, together with connections to the Ebro Nature Trail and the Ebro Delta, make it one of the most outstanding greenways in Spain and a memorable journey through railway heritage and Mediterranean landscapes.
