The Limerick Greenway / Great Southen Trail
Country: Ireland
EUROPEAN GREENWAYS AWARD 2025
Ireland’s rolling green landscape, much of it untouched by development, makes it an ideal destination for walking, cycling, and hiking enthusiasts as well as casual visitors. Over the past decade, numerous waymarked walking, cycling, and hiking routes have been developed, offering excellent opportunities for self-guided walking and cycling holidays throughout Ireland.
The Limerick Greenway (Great Southern Trail) is a unique 85 km route through the countryside of West Limerick and North Kerry. It follows the former Limerick–Tralee railway line, which opened in stages between 1867 and 1880 and closed between 1975 and 1977.
Today, the Limerick Greenway provides approximately 40 km of off-road walking and cycling routes, offering visitors a scenic and accessible way to explore the region’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
The greenway travel along the route of the previous limerick to Kerry rail line. Beautiful countryside bridges, viaduct, tunnel historical townlands and much more.
