Parenzana Greenway

Countries: Croatia, Slovenia & Italy

The Parenzana is a remarkable cross-border greenway created on the route of a former narrow-gauge railway that operated between 1902 and 1935. Today, it offers a unique cycling and walking experience through the Istrian Peninsula, connecting Trieste, Piran, and Poreč.

The route extends for approximately 123 km, crossing three countries and linking 33 towns and villages. Following the gentle gradients of the former railway, it passes through vineyards, olive groves, river valleys, medieval hilltop towns, tunnels, viaducts, and coastal landscapes.

One of the route’s greatest attractions is its railway heritage. Former stations, tunnels, bridges, viaducts, and railway milestones remain visible along the trail, preserving the memory of the railway that once connected communities and transported local products such as wine, olive oil, fruit, and salt across the region.

The Parenzana is also known as the “Path of Health and Friendship”, reflecting its role in promoting sustainable tourism, outdoor recreation, and cross-border cooperation. Extensive restoration has transformed the disused railway into one of Europe’s most attractive greenways, with signposted routes, restored structures, and visitor facilities along the way.

Three countries in one week between Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. The history of the ancient Republic of Venice, the so called “Serenissima” Republic, provides the background to the entire trip. From the wonderful Venice, you will cycle through the beaches on the coastline up to the plain of Friuli and then continue with the fascinating town of Trieste, finishing with the beautiful Istrian coast, a sight which is truly to be treasured.
