Fundación Vía Verde de La Sierra
The Foundation of the Sierra Greenway was established in the early 2000s as the managing body of the former Jerez–Almargen railway line, now refurbished and in use as a greenway and also part of Spain’s Natural Trails Programme. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees is composed of the Provincial Councils of Cádiz and Seville and the Town Councils of Coripe, Montellano, Olvera, Pruna, and Puerto Serrano. Its main mission focuses on the conservation, maintenance, and proper management of public use and facilities linked to the Sierra Greenway – Vía Verde De La Sierra, in line with the core objectives of the “Tejido Verde” Programme.
The foundation’s main mission is to conserve, maintain, and promote the Vía Verde de la Sierra while fostering sustainable rural development. Its activities include maintaining the greenway infrastructure, preserving disused railway heritage, promoting cultural, educational, recreational, and sports activities, and encouraging economic development and job creation in surrounding rural areas. The foundation also works to ensure that the route is accessible and inclusive for all users and collaborates with public and private entities at local, national, and international levels.
The Vía Verde de la Sierra itself extends for approximately 36.5 km between the towns of Puerto Serrano and Olvera, crossing the provinces of Cádiz and Seville. The route features 30 tunnels, 4 viaducts, restored railway stations converted into accommodations and restaurants, and the Peñón de Zaframagón, home to one of Europe’s largest colonies of griffon vultures. The foundation also manages visitor services, interpretation centers, and tourism facilities that make the greenway a leading destination for hiking, cycling, and nature tourism in Andalusia.
