Walk Wheel Cycle Trust
The Walk Wheel Cycle Trust is a UK-wide charity dedicated to making it easier, safer, and more enjoyable for people to walk, wheel, and cycle. Formerly known as Sustrans, the organization adopted its new name in 2025 to better reflect its mission of promoting active and inclusive travel for everyone. Founded in 1977 in Bristol, it has grown into one of the United Kingdom’s leading sustainable transport organizations.
The Trust is best known as the custodian of the National Cycle Network, a nationwide system of more than 12,000 miles (20,000 km) of signed routes connecting cities, towns, and rural areas across the UK. Much of the network consists of traffic-free paths, including many converted former railway lines, which provide safe spaces for walking, wheeling, and cycling. The organization also works to improve existing routes and create more accessible infrastructure for people of all ages and abilities.
Beyond infrastructure, the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust delivers projects in schools, workplaces, and communities to encourage active travel and reduce car dependency. It carries out research, influences public policy, and collaborates with governments and local authorities throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Its work aims to improve public health, reduce carbon emissions, strengthen communities, and create more liveable places.
The charity relies on a large network of staff, volunteers, supporters, and partners to achieve its goals. Today, it has hundreds of employees and thousands of volunteers who help maintain routes, engage communities, and advocate for safer streets. Guided by values such as learning, equity, collaboration, and responsibility, the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust seeks to create a future in which everyone can travel actively and sustainably.
