🌿🚲 From 5 to 12 September 2026, the Shepton Mallet area in the UK is hosting the Greenways and Cycleroutes Path Construction Workcamp.

Summer workcamps organised by Greenways and Cycleroutes bring together volunteers of different ages and backgrounds to help build, restore and maintain greenways and cycling routes across the UK. The project received first prize at the European Greenways Award 2025 in the category “Exemplary initiatives.”

Typically held in late summer, these camps combine volunteering, outdoor activities and social interaction. Participants can join for a few days or for the whole week, camping on site and working alongside engineers, local residents and experienced volunteers.

This September, our British partner and EGWA Member, Greenways and Cycleroutes, together with a dedicated group of volunteers, are working at three different locations:

1. Rock Farm Quarry Campsite
This is the base for the workcamp, where volunteers are carrying out carpentry work, making benches and steps, and organising supplies and materials for the other projects.

2. Somerset and Dorset Railway, off Forum Lane
Here, volunteers are repairing an arched farm bridge, constructing lead-in safety features, building steps from the high-level railway to the path through the arch, installing seating, clearing vegetation and repointing brickwork on the Bath Road Viaduct.

3. Ridge Road at the Three Arch Bridge, overlooking Glastonbury Tor
A group is cleaning the recently exposed rock faces along the approaches to the road bridge, constructing new masonry walls, installing seating so visitors can enjoy the views, and putting up a section of boundary fencing. Later in the year, nearly 4,000 bushes will be planted on the landscaped mounds to enhance the habitat for local bats. 🦇🌱
