Vía Verde del Noroeste

Country: España, region Murcia

The Vía Verde del Noroeste is a 78 km greenway created on the former Murcia–Caravaca de la Cruz railway line. Designed for cyclists, walkers, and other non-motorised users, it connects the city of Murcia with the historic pilgrimage destination of Caravaca de la Cruz, offering a safe and accessible route through some of the most diverse landscapes in the Region of Murcia.

Following the gentle gradients of the former railway, the route passes through fertile orchards along the Segura River, dramatic badlands shaped by the Mula River, pine forests, almond groves, vineyards, and a series of charming rural towns. Its low gradient—typically no more than 3%—makes it suitable for users of all ages and abilities.

The greenway preserves a rich railway heritage, including restored stations, tunnels, viaducts, and bridges. Many former railway stations have been converted into hostels and visitor facilities, providing accommodation and services along the route.

The route also offers significant cultural and natural attractions. It passes through areas protected under the Natura 2000network and connects several historic towns, including Mula, Bullas, and Cehegín, before reaching Caravaca de la Cruz, one of Spain’s most important pilgrimage destinations.
