Voie Verte du chemin de halage de la Mayenne

Country: France

The Mayenne Towpath Greenway is one of France’s most renowned riverside greenways, following the banks of the Mayenne River through the heart of western France. Originally used by horses and boatmen to tow barges upstream, the historic towpath has been transformed into a safe, traffic-free route for cyclists, walkers, horse riders, and other non-motorised users.

The route extends for approximately 85 km within the Mayenne Department, linking the towns of Mayenne, Laval, and Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne before continuing south towards Daon. It forms an important section of the long-distance La Vélo Francette cycle route, which connects Normandy with the Atlantic coast.

Travelling along the river, visitors discover a rich heritage landscape shaped by centuries of inland navigation. The route passes locks, lock-keepers’ houses, mills, bridges, riverside villages, historic towns, and châteaux, while interpretive panels explain the history of river transport and local culture.

The greenway is also celebrated for its natural environment. The Mayenne River corridor supports diverse wildlife and plant species, including kingfishers, otters, amphibians, and riverside vegetation. Its flat profile and tranquil setting make it particularly attractive for families and leisure cyclists seeking a relaxed cycling experience.
