Ojos Negros Greenway
Country: Spain, regions: Aragón and Valencia
EUROPEAN GREENWAYS AWARD 2021
La Vía Verde de Ojos Negros, also known as la Vía Minera), follows the route of the former Ojos Negros–Sagunto mining railway. This narrow-gauge railway operated between 1907 and 1972, when it was closed, and the tracks were subsequently removed. The route, adapted for walking and cycling, is 182.2 km long and runs from Ojos Negros (Teruel) to Albalat de Taronchers (Valencia). It is currently the longest greenway in Spain. Due to the terrain’s topography, the route includes 21 tunnels—the longest of which are illuminated—and 21 viaducts.
This network divides the route into three stages:
- Stage 1: Ojos Negros (Sierra Menera Mines) – Santa Eulalia (currently open as far as Peracense)
- Stage 2: Santa Eulalia – Puerto Escandón (the highest point along the route)
- Stage 3: Puerto Escandón – Algimia de Alfara.
