The European Heritage Label (EHL) is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2026. This initiative by the European Commission is a recognition that honours heritage sites of outstanding European value and significance—both historical and symbolic.

On April 22, 2026, in Brussels, Kris Rockelé, Advisor at the Department of Recreation and Tourism of the Province of Antwerp, representing the European Greenways Association EGWA, attended the celebration, during which 13 new sites were added to the EHL community. The event provided a valuable opportunity for networking and discussing potential joint heritage projects.

EGWA promotes sustainable tourism linked to greenways and the heritage values of their surroundings. Many greenways are developed along disused railway lines with significant heritage value. They contribute to preserving and enhancing this heritage, supporting the maintenance and revitalization of railway assets (such as stations, bridges, and tunnels), and repurposing them for new uses accessible to all users—cyclists, walkers, and people with reduced mobility.

EGWA is a member of the European Commission’s Together for Tourism Expert Group. It promotes sustainable tourism as well as industrial and cultural heritage connected with greenways, and was therefore invited to participate in the EHL celebration. EGWA also collaborates with the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
