Diputación Foral de Álava

Department of Economic Development and Sustainability / Departamento de Desarrollo Económico y Sostenibilidad

The Diputación Foral de Álava (in Basque, Araba Foru Aldundia) is the provincial government of Álava/Araba, one of the three provinces of the Basque Country in Spain. It is a regional public administration authority with a status that is stronger than a typical provincial council in Spain, because the Basque Country has a special fiscal and administrative system (“foral system”).

Greenways in Álava are a dense, well-planned network of cycling and walking routes, built around the Vasco-Navarro railway greenway and a broader provincial system that connects nature, towns, and the capital Vitoria-Gasteiz into one continuous sustainable mobility landscape.

The flagship greenway is Vasco-Navarro Greenway (Vía Verde del Vasco-Navarro):

  • One of the longest rail-trails in Spain
  • Connects Vitoria-Gasteiz → Estella (Navarra) and further extensions
  • Passes through valleys, forests, tunnels, and rural towns
  • Key cultural stops include Estíbaliz and Antoñana
  • Used heavily by cyclists, hikers, and long-distance tourists
