Associazione Italiana Greenways
The Associazione Italiana Greenways (AIG) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1998 to promote the development of greenways throughout Italy. Established by academics, researchers, public-sector representatives, and professionals, the association works to advance the planning, design, and implementation of greenways by reusing existing linear infrastructure such as abandoned railways, canal towpaths, rural roads, and historic routes. Its goal is to connect people with Italy’s natural, cultural, and historical landscapes while encouraging sustainable mobility and environmental conservation.
AIG supports initiatives that enhance and protect greenways, promote rural development through sustainable tourism, and create green corridors linking urban and rural areas. The organization sees greenways as tools for improving quality of life, strengthening local identity, preserving cultural heritage, and encouraging healthier, non-motorized forms of transport such as walking and cycling. Italy’s extensive network of rivers, canals, mountains, historic paths, and disused railway corridors provides significant opportunities for this type of development.
The association also serves as a knowledge and coordination hub for greenway initiatives across Italy. Its activities include mapping existing and potential greenways, maintaining documentation and research resources, organizing conferences and seminars, and fostering collaboration among local authorities, researchers, and community organizations. Through these efforts, AIG contributes to the growth of a national greenway network that supports sustainable tourism, active mobility, heritage preservation, and regional development.
