Great Southern Trail Association

The Great Southern Trail (GST) is a nonprofit organization in Ireland dedicated to developing and promoting a long-distance greenway along the former Limerick–Tralee railway line. Founded by local volunteers, the association has played a leading role in preserving the historic railway corridor and transforming it into a safe, traffic-free route for walking and cycling. Its efforts were recognized internationally when it received a Special Jury Prize at the European Greenways Awards.

The trail forms part of a larger greenway network that links the Limerick Greenway and the North Kerry Greenway, creating an off-road route that is planned to extend approximately 85 km between Limerick and Tralee. The project combines sustainable mobility, outdoor recreation, heritage conservation, and rural development. By reusing former railway infrastructure—including tunnels, bridges, stations, and embankments—the greenway provides opportunities for tourism, healthy lifestyles, and local economic growth while preserving an important part of Ireland’s transport history.
