Registration Open | Conference: “Destination Greenway? Rethinking the Redevelopment of Former Railway Corridors”

Tuesday, 22 September 2026 La Cité, 55 Avenue Louis Breguet, 31400 Toulouse, France

The third AF3V Conference, hosted by the Occitanie Region, invites elected officials, local authority officers, consultants, representatives of associations, and professionals in mobility and spatial planning to reflect on the complementarity between rail transport and active mobility.

Rather than presenting these two modes of transport as competing alternatives, the conference will focus on key issues shaping modern territorial planning.

Following the opening address by Carole Delga, President of the Occitanie Region, the morning programme will include a plenary session and two panel discussions covering:

  • the potential for redeveloping former railway corridors in the context of renewed interest in rail transport and local railway lines, with particular attention to the reversibility of infrastructure developments;
  • maintaining a balance between biodiversity (flora and fauna) and new infrastructure projects on former railway land.

At lunchtime, participants and partners will have the opportunity to continue discussions during a networking cocktail lunch in the exhibition area. A pre-booked speed-meeting session will also take place in parallel.

The afternoon will feature three workshops dedicated to sharing experience, practical tools and good practices on:

  • enhancing railway, landscape and industrial heritage with a speech of Arantxa Hernandez Colorado, Manager of the Spanish Greenways Program at the Spanish Railways Foundation and the Secretary General of the European Greenways Association;
  • the coexistence of greenways and railway infrastructure within former railway corridors;
  • engineering structures and project costs.

The conference will also include several special events. Participants will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the “Greenways and Railways Charter,” which remains as relevant today as ever. On this occasion, new partners will join the original signatories: AF3V, the French Cyclists’ Federation (FUB), the National Federation of Public Transport Users’ Associations (FNAUT), the French Cycling Federation (FFVélo), Friends of Nature, and France Nature Environnement (FNE).
