Summer workcamps on Greenways

Country: United Kingdom

EUROPEAN GREENWAYS AWARD 2025

The summer workcamps organised by Greenways and Cycleroutes are one of the organisation’s most distinctive activities. They bring together volunteers from different ages and backgrounds to help build, restore, and maintain greenways and cycling routes across the UK.

Typically held in late summer, these camps combine volunteering, outdoor activities, and social interaction. Participants can join for a few days or for the entire week, camping on site and working alongside engineers, local residents, and experienced volunteers.

Activities vary according to the project but often include:

  • Building and surfacing greenway sections.
  • Restoring former railway infrastructure such as tunnels, viaducts, and bridges.
  • Installing fencing, gates, signs, benches, and wildlife-friendly features.
  • Managing vegetation and improving accessibility.
  • Supporting route maintenance and landscape enhancement.
