Rete Ferroviaria Italiana – RFI
Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) is the company responsible for managing Italy’s national railway infrastructure. RFI’s mission is to connect different regions of Italy through a safe, efficient, and reliable rail system. The company manages thousands of kilometres of railway lines, stations, signalling systems, and related infrastructure while carrying out major investment programmes to modernize the network and expand high-speed rail connections. Sustainability is a central part of its strategy, with a focus on promoting environmentally friendly mobility, improving accessibility, and supporting the economic integration and competitiveness of Italy.
Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) is not only Italy’s railway infrastructure manager but also one of the country’s most important promoters of greenway development. Through its Greenways programme, RFI supports the conversion of disused railway lines and railway properties into walking and cycling routes, giving new life to infrastructure that is no longer used for rail transport. The initiative is part of the company’s broader commitment to sustainability, territorial regeneration, and active mobility.
RFI estimates that the FS Group owns around 1,450 km of disused railway lines, of which more than 1,200 km are potentially available for conversion into greenways after excluding routes preserved for tourist railways. To facilitate these projects, RFI works with local authorities and other stakeholders, transferring former railway corridors and buildings for reuse. The company has also published several editions of its Atlas of Greenways on Former Railway Lines, documenting successful conversions and identifying opportunities for future projects throughout Italy.
RFI views greenways as more than recreational trails. They are considered strategic tools for promoting sustainable tourism, improving quality of life, preserving railway heritage, and connecting communities through low-carbon mobility. More than 500 km of former FS railway lines have already been transformed into greenways, while additional routes remain available for future development. RFI also collaborates with organizations promoting “slow mobility” and has developed digital mapping initiatives that integrate rail stations, cycling routes, greenways, walking trails, cultural sites, and natural attractions into a single sustainable mobility network.

SPECIAL JURY AWARD: Cyclo-pedestrian path Monte Ciocci-San Pietro. Presented by Roma Capitale – Department of Sustainable Mobility and Transport. In recognition of the realisation of the ambitious project that has been carried out in the city of Rome, consisting in the construction of an attractive greenway of approximately 1,200 m, using an old railway bridge and a tunnel, both part of the disused Rome-Viterbo railway line, to create a safe access to the Vatican, for pilgrim, as the new official terminus of the Francigena, for the local community, and for cycle tourists. This project represents a model of regeneration of an urban asset and collaboration between public bodies, making the most of an extraordinary opportunity both in view of the 2025 Jubilee and for the daily mobility of citizens; it is an extension of the existing ‘Monte Ciocci-Monte Mario’ pedestrian-cycleway.
2nd prize Excellence: Via Verde della Costa dei Trabocchi – Greenway of the Trabocchi Coast. Presented by Abruzzo Region. For the impressive transformation of a disused railway line into a 42 km high-quality greenway, integrated into the stunning landscape of the Teatine coast, resulting in a spectacular greenway. It is an extraordinary example of environmental recovery, which has required a long process. It represents a major transformation and enhancement of the Costa dei Trabocchi territory, integrating also sustainable mobility models.
2nd Prize: RFI-4-Greenways. Spread the knowledge on the disused railways to improve the realisation of greenways. Presented by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana S.P.A. (Italy). For the set of communication actions carried out in recent years by the public company RFI and its commitment at the highest level to disseminate knowledge of the disused railway heritage, its value and the advantages for communities of their conversion into greenways; furthermore to encourage people to reach and enjoy greenways cycling and/or walking by using the train.
