Infraestruturas de Portugal – IP Patrimonio
IP Património – Administração e Gestão Imobiliária, S.A. (IPP) is a company within the Portuguese infrastructure group Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP). It is responsible for managing, preserving, and enhancing the railway and road heritage and real estate assets of the IP Group. The company combines heritage conservation with commercial development and sustainable reuse of infrastructure.
IPP is particularly active in promoting:
- Railway heritage (Património Ferroviário);
- Road heritage (Património Rodoviário);
- Historic stations and buildings;
- Ecopistas (greenways created on former railway lines).
The company views disused railway corridors not as abandoned infrastructure but as valuable assets that can be transformed into spaces for recreation, tourism, and active mobility. Through its Ecopistas program, IPP supports the conversion of former railways into cycling and walking routes that preserve heritage while contributing to regional development.
The National Ecopistas Program (Plano Nacional de Ecopistas – PNE) is one of Portugal’s most important initiatives for converting disused railway corridors into greenways for walking, cycling, and other forms of active mobility. Managed by IP Património, the program combines heritage conservation, sustainable tourism, and regional development. The PNE was established in 2001 to promote the rehabilitation and reuse of railway lines and canals no longer in operation.
Objectives of the Program
The National Ecopistas Program aims to:
- Reuse abandoned railway infrastructure rather than allowing it to deteriorate.
- Preserve railway heritage, including stations, bridges, and tunnels.
- Promote sustainable tourism and active lifestyles.
- Support local economies and rural development.
- Improve environmental awareness and climate-friendly mobility.
Portugal currently has more than 500 km of ecopistas distributed across 20 greenways, representing nearly half of the country’s disused railway corridors. The network has expanded significantly thanks to European funding and municipal partnerships.
