Comunidade Intermunicipal Viseu Dão Lafões

The Comunidade Intermunicipal Viseu Dão Lafões (CIM VDL) is an intermunicipal association in central Portugal that brings together 14 municipalities in the Viseu Dão-Lafões region, with the city of Viseu serving as its main urban center. Its mission is to promote regional development, improve public services, and strengthen cooperation among municipalities.

CIM VDL is actively engaged in sustainability initiatives, including circular economy projects, green public procurement, and resource efficiency. It participates in European programs aimed at reducing waste, promoting material reuse, and supporting local businesses in the transition to a more circular economy.

CIM Viseu Dão Lafões is an example of how intermunicipal cooperation can drive sustainable mobility, innovation, and regional development while improving quality of life across both urban and rural communities.

The Viseu Dão Lafões region is one of Portugal’s leading greenway destinations and is home to the country’s most iconic Ecopistas. The region has successfully transformed former railway lines into high-quality cycling and walking routes that support tourism, sustainable mobility, and regional development. The Ecopistas are today considered strategic assets for the territory and part of a broader European greenway network.

The Ecopista do Dão is the region’s best-known greenway. Built on the former Linha do Dão railway, it stretches approximately 49 km between Viseu and Santa Comba Dão. The railway closed in 1988 and was converted into an ecopista between 2007 and 2011 through a partnership between CIM Viseu Dão Lafões and local municipalities.

In 2023, the region inaugurated the Ecopista do Vouga, extending the greenway network to approximately 115 km of continuous routes, making it the largest continuous ecopista system in Portugal.
