European Greenways Association is proud to be a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism.

As a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration, we commit to deliver plans aligned with the pathways (measure, decarbonize, regenerate, collaborate, finance) and continuously update our strategies, integrate emerging climate research, and implement best practices that align with the most up-to-date pathways to Net Zero. By doing so, EGWA not only contributes to emissions reductions but also help to build a more climate-resilient tourism sector that safeguards destinations, communities, and ecosystems for the future.

 EGWA commits to:

  • Support the global climate goals to halve emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero as soon as possible before 2050;
  • Deliver climate action plans within 12 months from becoming a signatory (or update existing plans) and implement them;
  • Align plans with the five strategic pathways proposed in the Declaration (measure, decarbonize, regenerate, collaborate and finance);
  • Report publicly on an annual basis on progress against targets, as well as on actions being taken to implement the plans;
  • Work in a collaborative spirit, sharing good practices and solutions, and disseminating information to encourage additional organizations to become signatories and supporting one another.

The Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism unites travel and tourism behind a common set of pathways for climate action, aligning the sector with global commitments and catalysing collaborative solutions to the many challenges facing businesses and destinations globally. As scientific understanding evolves, so too must the actions of the tourism sector. The Glasgow Declaration Initiative encourages signatories to continuously update their strategies, integrate emerging climate research, and implement best practices that align with the most up-to-date pathways to Net Zero. By doing so, signatories not only contribute to emissions reductions but also help to build a more climate-resilient tourism sector that safeguards destinations, communities, and ecosystems for the future.

The Declaration was launched in November 2021, it has been operating as a participatory initiative where signatories exchange knowledge and support each other in the implementation of their voluntary commitments. In November 2023, the Glasgow Declaration was recognized as a Global Climate Action Initiative by UNFCCC which included it in the Global Climate Action Portal. In November 2024, for the first time, tourism was included officially in the Action Agenda of UN Climate Change COP29. The collective efforts of Glasgow Declaration signatories were instrumental to this achievement.

As a result of the inclusion of tourism in the Action Agenda of COP29, the framework for tourism climate action was strengthened. The COP29 Declaration on Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism was launched (endorsed by 62 governments) consolidating unprecedented high-level political commitment to advance climate action in tourism. At COP29, the Glasgow Declaration Initiative on Climate Action in Tourism is acknowledged as a tool for implementation to accelerate climate action in tourism.

As a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, EGWA has committed to raise its climate ambition in support of global climate goals. It also has agreed to deliver (or update) a climate action plan within 12 months, aligned with the five pathways of the Declaration (Measure, Decarbonize, Regenerate, Collaborate, Finance), report progress on an annual basis, and work in a collaborative spirit, sharing good practices and solutions, and disseminating information.

By joining the Glasgow Declaration Initiative, EGWA is demonstrating leadership and commitment, showing that a collaborative and determined approach can drive real impact. The transition to a sustainable tourism sector is underway, and together, we are proving that meaningful change is possible.
