The Department of Transport is the ministry tasked with responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to Active Travel and Greenways in Ireland. There is a commitment to deliver 1,000km of new and upgraded walking and cycling infrastructure by 2030 – 140km of new and upgraded Greenway infrastructure is included in this target. The Department recognises the benefits that can arise from the further development of Greenways in Ireland, as a enabler of modal shift from motorised vehicles, as a tourism product with significant potential to attract overseas visitors, for local communities in terms of economic benefits and undertaking daily journeys, and for all users as an amenity for physical activity and a contributor to health and wellbeing.
